Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 293 Salem St was built between 1847 and 1852 for George B. Woodbridge, cordwainer. Woodbridge, born in 1820, married Eliza Harnden in 1849. They had two children. In 1847 George bought the undeveloped piece of land here from Jesse Harnden, whose farm was just down the road (now No. 261 Salem St). Possibly Woodbridge had overextended himself with this investment, for the land was soon under mortgage for $300 to neighbor and builder (and perhaps the designer of this house?) William S.
Jenkins, and in 1853 the homestead was sold to Charles E. Abbott, a farmer. Abbot lived here for seven years before selling to two speculators, whowere followed by two more short-term owners. These were succeeded by Henry C. Harnden, Jesse's son, who owned the house from 1863 to 1887. The Wright family owned the property for the longest period in the 20th century, from 1905 to 1962. Although small and compact, this cottage is a remarkable stylistic statement. The wide corner pilasters and fully pedimented gable end are uncommon features in Andover, well-balancing the classical recessed doorway. Such bold detailing on the modest home of a craftsman best distinguishes this rural home. The Woodbridge House is significant as a uniquely bold example of a Greek Revival cottage, especially remarkable for its rural locationand modest occupants.
The property retains integrity of design, materials, worknanship, and setting. and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
