Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Musgrove Block at 2 Main Street was built in 1895 by businessman John H. Flint. The prominent site on E1m Square, the major traffic intersection of downtown Andover, was previously the location of Elm House, a hotel and tavern dating from the late 18th century. The modern commercial building at its opening housed various activities, including a drugstore, bicycle store, and business offices.
The flat-iron shaped building is obviously adapted to the odd configuration of its site, The chytlmie fenestation is excellently defined by strong, granite trim, decorative brickwork, and a focal center pavilion on the facade; the impressive composition is further enhanced by a sensitive recent renovation. The Musgrove Block is an excellent example of late Victorian conmerical architecture in Andover, representing the dense development of the central business district in that prosperous period. The building retains integrity of design, materials; workmanship, and setting, meeting Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
