Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 37 Porter Rd is thought to have been built ca. 1760 for Hezekiah Ballard, a farmer and later tavernkeeper.
In 1771 Ballard sold the homestead to Thomas Manning, a cordwainer who kept a small shop on the property. The house has remained in the Manning family ever since. Thomas (1747-1832, m. 1769 Mehitabel Kidder) left the majority of his property to his son Thomas (1781-1849, m. 1805 Sally Hart and 1844 Adeline Abbot). The younger Thomas was also a farmer and shoemaker, cultivating a total of 100 acres of land. He died in possession of an estate worth over $7000, including a small ($3) library and two buffalo robes. The homestead then passed to Thomas's son John Hart Manning (1824-1868), a gentleman and clergyman (graduate of Andover Theological Seminary), Whose descendants have continued to occupy the house. The building's most unusual feature is its gambrel roof, uncommon in Andover.
The simple, unembellished facade with the original window sash is also a notable feature of this long, narrow building. The Manning House is significant (1) for its unusual use of the gambrel roof (one of only two known from this period), and (2) for its associations with the well-known Manning family, which included farmers, shoemakers, and a minister. The property meets Criteria A and C of the National Register; it retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting. 10.
