Jenkins (1756-1834), a gentleman farmer, married first (1779) Peggy Flint-- with whom he had four children-- and second (1805) Sally Thompson. In Its'early days the house was a stagecoach stop for entertaining passengers on the way to and from Salem. The building is also notable as the first to be insured by the Merrimack Mutual Fire Insurance Company, in Policy No. 1 dated April 9, 1828. After Benjamin's death Sally moved to Gloucester and the major part of this farmstead was inherited by sons Benjamin, Samuel, and William Jenkins. Capt. Benjamin Jenkins Jr. (1786-1835) was married twice like his father, first (1808) to Naomi Carter and second (1821) to Elizabeth Berry. Benjamin Jr. bequeathed to his family a substantial estate worth $7036 in land and buildings and $1765 in personal property.
The latter was highlighted by a library ($6), several carpets, silver spoons, and a looking glass. The 1845 description of the widow's allowance indicates the presence of a carriage house, barn, shed, corn barn, and a shop in addition to the dwelling house. Benjamin Jr.'s son William S. Jenkins-- carpenter and later a builder/contractor (1824-1900) lived here until 1853, building a substantial ell at the rear of this house in 1849. After moving to his own house on Main St, the homsestead was left to brother John B. Jenkins (1829-1913), who was born and died here. Historical Significance, continued The house is strategically located at a major intersection, which affords a nice display of its imposing design. The substantial four-square structure is highlighted by a traditional center chimney, elegantly attenuated center doorway, and small original windows.
It is an ambitious and obviously early Federal-style house, excellently preserved. The Benjamin Jenkins House is significant (1) for its early use as a stagecoach stopl; (2) for its associations with the Jenkins family, whose occupants here included a noted local builder; and (3) as a substantial design in the Federal style. The property meets Criteria A and C of the National Register.
