Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Holt farmhouse was built ca. 1708-1715 by Nicholas Holt III (1683-1756). Nicholas, grandson of one of the town's original proprietors, farmed a homestead of 30 acres plus other scattered sites.
Eventually the estate was one of the largest landholdings in Andover, having a radius of one mile from the house. According to record and tradition, the Holts always kept two yoke of oxen on the farm. Nicholas III was married first (1708) to Mary Manning, and second (1717) to Dorcas Abbott. Described at his death as a gentleman, Nicholas's estate then included an impressive array of clothing and furnishings. The land was farmed by seven generations of the locally prominent Holt family, who continued to live here until the 1880s. The present owner is, appropriately enough, a Holt descendant himself. The integral leanto house is the focal point of Holt's Hill and faces southward with a view of Boston on clear days.
(It is said that a crowd of townspeople gathered here to observe the smoke and cannon explosions of the Battle of Bunker Hill.) Aside from its remote setting and its form, the building is distinguished by its great central chimney, original framework, and early interiors. The Holt Farm is significant (1) for its long associations with the Holt family, farmers prominent in the development of eastern Andover, and (2) as an important example of the evolution of a 17th century farmhouse. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
