Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 261 Salem St was built ca. 1840 for Jesse Harnden (1811-81), a farmer who moved here from Reading. Harnden, who had married Dorothy Willett in 1835, bought the land from Amos Pearson in 1839. He prospered as a farmer and left an estate worth nearly $9000 -- divided nearly equally between real and personal estate. In 1881 the dwelling house was worth only $75 more than the substantial barn which accompanied it and still stands.

Jesse's son George inherited the property and occupied it until his death in 1902, although he continued to operate a shoe factory in Lynn at the same time. A few years after his death the homestead was sold out of the original family. This very traditional design retains a surprisingly late amount of Federal-style influence in its plan, form, and graceful proportions. The Greek: Revival period is unmistakable however in the pedimented gable ends and unusually stylish barn. The center portico with its fluted columns and roof balustrade is particularly remarkable in this remote area. The Harnden Farm is interesting for the late, transitional design of the house and a striking Greek Revival barn; it has long associations with the agricultural history of Andover as well.

The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and neets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
