Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Harding Street was laid out in 1826 to connect High Street, an early thoroughfare, with the old paper mill on the Shawsheen River. It was named for the Harding family, who owned a large amount of land in this vicinity as well as a partnership in the paper mill. In 1842 Sarah H. Harding bought from her mother the land now 6-8 Harding Street. The house was built by 1846, when Sarah (a singlewoman): sold half of the duplex to Hannah Barker (a widow).
The design and förm of this building are a conscious response to ar new social need for housing singlewomen of modest means. Sarah Harding's estate at her death in 1867 was evenly split (approximately $1200 each) between real estate and personal estate. The inventory of the latter gives an interesting picture of mid-19th century furnishings--oil carpets, inter alia-- to complement the architecture. No. 6-8 Harding Street is an unusually fine example of the Greek Revival style in Andover. The architect/builder confidently uses the new flushboarding, glazed doorways, and pediment motif, but hesitates in a traditional building plan and in an unfamiliarity with the most successful proportions for the window tarim... Even so, the creative vernacularism of this building is a noteworthy achievement with great visual effect.
The Sarah Harding House is significant (1) for its interesting role as housing for unmarried women; (2) for its uncormon duplex form; and (3) for its high quality Greek Revival design. The property meets Criteria A and C of the National Register, retaining integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting. 10.
