Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 232 Salem St is thought to have been built in 1812 by David Gray, a farmer (1762-1844). Gray was married first to Sarah Cummings (in 1788) and second to Rebecca Jenkins (1797).

The Gray farm dates from 1699, when Robert Gray bought land from his father-in-law, Nicholas Holt. In the 18th century the farm was noted for its blacksmith shop (still said to be standing, a small structure across the street from the dwelling house) and a grist mill. The builder's father, also named David, unexplicably committed suicide by hanging in 1767 and became the subject of a reproachful sermon published by the Rev. Phillips, who would not allow a Christian burial. David the son left his uninventoried but extensive estate to his children with careful instructions for negotiating its division. Perhaps ais father's untimely death influenced this unusual measure, explained by his "having experienced many disappointments in settling estates."1 Youngest son Henry Jenkins Gray (m.

Lydia Sawyer, 1851) inherited most of the farm and soon added a cider mill (the "first power mill for miles around"2) and a saw mill. Henry was praised in his day as a "man of resource, well read, generous and trustworthy, was a neighbor indeed, and loyal to home and town (:) he is a model of what our farms should continue to produce in these days of new opportunity."3 - The farm remained in the Gray family until the 1930s. The solidly proportioned building sits comfortably on a still-large estate, oriented to the south. The large windows, center chimney, and substantial pedimented entrance carefully anchor and distinguish the house. The David Gray House is significant (1) for its ancient associations with the Gray family, and (2) for fis role in the agricultural economy of Andover.
