Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 166 North Main St was built ca. 1851-52 for Nathan Frye, manufacturer. Frye (1808-1894) was a manager at the Marland Manufacturing Co. and became its president upon the death of founder Abraham Marland in 1849. Frye ran the company for nearly 30 years, "maintaining a name for probity and energy."1 After making "a snug fortune"2 from the business in the Civil War, he sold the Marland Mills to Moses I. Stevens in 1879. In addition to his business pursuits, Frye was a stock subscriber (1835) in the Episcopal Church of Andover.
Frye was married in 1833 to Amanda Gleason and had two children. As an example of the interrelationships among the manufacturing families, Amanda's ophaned niece, Sarah Elizabeth Gleason, was adopted by Benjamin Punchard, treasurer of the Marland Mills. This mansion house, built shortly after his succession to the presidence, reflects Nathan Frye's newly "enhanced status. Grandly Italianate, the building features pedimented gables, eaves brackets, corner quoins, boldly detailed windows with high cornices and bracketed sills, and a small, Ionic-columned porch. The design has suffered extensive additions in recent years but retains much of its original, impressive style. Conveniently located adjacent to the Marland Mills, the estate once included several acres of land on part of what had been known as the Paper Mill lot.
The Nathan Frye House is significant (1) for its original occupant, leader of one of Andover's major mills, and (2) as a well-executive example of early Italianate design in the town. The property retains integrity of design, materi- als, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria B and C of the National Register. 10.
