Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 125 Dascomb Rd was built by Jacob Johnson (1727-1808) shortly after his marriage to Sarah Dolliver in 1758. Johnson was a blacksmith and had his shop on this property. He left the dwelling house, barm, and blacksmith shop, plus 50 acres of land, to his son Osgood Johnson, also a blacksmith. subsequently inherited (1808) by Osgood's son, also named Osgood. The second Osgood (1803-1836) was a graduate of Phillips Academy and Dartmouth College and later became headmaster of Phillips Academy.

Osgood deeded the property to his brother-in-law Jacob Dascomb of New Hampshire in 1832. Dascomb was known as a mild mannered, pious man and was fourth deacon of the West Parish Church. Financial losses caused Dascomb to sell the property to H.w. French in 1852; the house has since passed through a long series of owners, highlighted at the turn of this century by sea captain Ilewellyn Murch, who added a piazza (now removed) to the facade. The building retains most of the features of its original, design-- including its 5-bay facade, center entrance, and center chimney-- but it has been enriched by Greek Revival corner blocks at the windows and a modest but solidly proportioned entry vestibule. The Dascomb House is significant in the early development of southern Andover, including asso- ciations with locally prominent educational and religious figures.

In addition, it stands as an important example of mid-Georgian architecture with later additions. The Dascomb House retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A and C of the 10.
