Themes (check as many as applicable) The Jehiel Cochran House is significant (1) as the home of a brickmaker associated with an early civic industry; (2) for its use of a locally uncommon building material, brick; and (3) as a good example of the vernacular Greek Revival style in Andover, and one of the few of its period remaining in the vicinity of Shawsheen Village. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting; it meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 9.
Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 63 Burnhan Rd was constructed ca. 1838-40 by Jehiel Cochran, whose profession was, appropriately, brickmaker. Cochran was born in Andover in 1810 and died here. in 1860, but little else of his life is known. He was very likely associated with the Town brickyard located just west on Burnham Rd. Abbott's history in 1829 noted that "about 300,000 bricks are annlally made in the yard, and disposed of for the benefit of the town."1 Cochran may also have been associated in the construction of the Town Almshouse on Burnham Rd (ca. 1840), built of bricks from that brickyard and of the same style and general form as the Cochran House. The brickyard was closed by 1860, and by the time of his death in that same year Cochran was described as a farmer.
His inventory included $1117 for the house, barn and six acres of land, and $19.84 in personal effects, which included one lot of brick. James Keefe was the second owner-occupant of this property, from 1861 until his death in 1896. Keefe was also a farmer, of apparently the same modest success. His inventory included $1500 for the homestead, as above, and $20 (representing the value of a cow) in personal estate. Acchitecturally, No. 63 Burnham Rd is a conservative but straightforward example of the Greek Revival style. The rhythmic facade is nicely accented by the granite lintels and the focal central doorway with its classical trim. The use of brick here is also noteworthy for its rare appearance and is neatly related to both local business and the builder. 10.
