Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 210 Chandler Rd was built for Timothy Palmer Bailey ca. 1878. In that year Bailey bought seven pieces of land from the estate of his father, Timothy Bailey 2d, who had died in 1875.
The land was part of a huge homestead (valued at $24,000) which included approximately 260 acres of farm land along Chandler Rd and a pre-1830 house diagonally opposite No. 210. Bailey senior was a prominent member of the community-- charter subscriber of the West Parish Church and bridegroom in the first wedding (1827) to take place within the new meetinghouse-- but his conservative taste in housing apparently did not suit the son. Timothy P. Bailey graduated from Phillips Academy but returned to run the farm. After his marriage Bailey built himself a very fashionable new dwelling on the 132 acres of his own "Home Farm" and soon prospered. At his death in 1902, the estate was worth over $20,000. The pretentious design of this Italianate farmhouse is remarkable for both its successful execution and its very rural location.
The craftsmanship and placement of eaves brackets, window cornices, balustraded porch and other motifs are especially striking elements in their pastoral context. The Timothy Bailey House is significant (1) for its association with a leading West Andover family; (2) as the home of a farmer with the unusual distinction of a Phillips Academy education; and (3) as a good example of the later Italianate style in Andover and a rare appearance of such in a rural area of town. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
