Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Bradlee School was built during 1889 and 1890 from the designs of George G. Adams, a Lawrence architect (see also 22 Hidden Rd); the cost of construction was $14,350. The report of the school committed in 1890 notes that the building "is a credit to the place, and marks a new era in the educational affairs of that part of our town." At the time of its, construction the building was the only school supplied with town water, a much admired accomplishment.
In 1894 the school--previously known as the Ballard Vale School-- was officially named for Joseiah Putnam Bradlee, proprietor of the Ballardvale Mills, Boston businessman, and liberal benefactor of the Ballardvale community. Before construction of the Bradlee School, classes had been held in the building now known as the Ballardvale Community Center (see 179 Andover St, Ballardvale District). The structure is a handsome and restrained example of the late Victorian period, representative of public buildings in Andover at this time. Eclectic Queen Anne elements-- an asymmetrical pavilion, decorative brickwork, and delicate glazing, among others-- enrich the refined shapes of the mass and its fenestration; the extremely steep hipped roof is uncommonly strsiking. An imposing hill-top setting emphasizes the grand effect.
Bradlee School is significant (1) for its associations with the development of the Ballardvale conmunity, and (2) as an excellent example of civic architecture of the period. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
