Themes (check as many as applicable) Aboriginal Conservation Recreation The Chandler-Bigsby-Abbot House is significant (1) as an excellent example of First Period architecture in Andover, and (2) for its associations with several locally prominent families. The property meets Criteria A and C of the National Register, and retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting. 9. Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Chandler-Bigsby-Abbot House is traditionally dated ca.

1674, the year that Hannah Chandler was married to Daniel Bigsby; it was standing at least by 1688, when Thomas Chandler sold his son-in-law a piece of land next to the latter's house. Until the late 19th century the property was an operating farm. Daniel Bigsby died in 1717, leaving the homestead (land and buildings) jointly to his wife and son Joseph. The property passed from Joseph to his daughter Experience, who married William Abbot in 1747. Their son Capt. Jeduthan Abbot inherited the property in 1798, when it included 91 acres of land. Jeduthan, aed respected.pentleman,is knowm to have 1ived with his Father, "respectable Not only respectable but elegant, Jeduthan's wardrobe as described in his inventory included velvet pantaloons, a velvet waistcoat, and a silk waistcoat. Jeduthan Abbot Jr. (back to the characteristic yeoman description) inherited this property in 1810.

Although he lived with his father for a time, Jeduthan Jr. moved out of the by-now crowded homestead ca. 1810 and built his own home up the street at No. 31 Lowell St. Remaining at the homestead was his borther, Deacon Amos Abbot, a prominent citizen who built his own house in the Main Street-Locke Street district. Jeduthan Jr.'s son Moody apparently came back to the old homestead to live (ca. 1840), and it remained in his family until its sale to the Ward family in 1879. The Wards lived here until 1944. Several additions have been made to the original four-room, leanto house, which is one of the oldest standing in Andover. An 18th century ell and hipped roofs have been major alterations, but a southern orientation (perpendicular to the street) and broad facades punctuated by small, narrow windows still suggest the building's great age. 10.
