Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 28 Essex Street was built ca. 1830-35 by Jacob Chickering as his own residence. Chickering (1806-1887) moved from the North Parish to the South Parish at age 12 and apprenticed as a carpenter under Stephen Holt; for a short time he was engaged in business with Capt. Nathaniel Whittier. Chickering was self-employed as a carpenter, housewright, and "artist" until about 1856, when he established a piano manufactory in Andover.
The business was only marginally successful and Chickering continued with smaller building projects until a decade before his death in 1887. Chickering is thought to have occupied No. 28 Essex St. until his marriage to Sarah MacMurphy in 1835, when he moved across the street to No. 29 and gave this house to his parents. The building is an early example of Chickering's unique blend of conservative form and creative detailing. His characteristic attention to detail is best evidenced in the panelled cornerblocks and centerblocks of the windows. The delicate proportions of these features is complemented by the classical doorway, 6/6 sash, and cornice molding, holdovers from the Federal period.
The Chickering House is significant (1) for its design, construction, and occupation by Andover's leading architectural designer of the mid-19th century, Jacob Chickering; and (2) as a strong example of transitional styling, featuring Chickering's noted cornerblock motif. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting; it meets criteria B and C of the National Register. 10.
