Themes (check as many as applicable) Aboriginal Conservation Recreation The Chandler-Hidden House is significant (1) for its associations with two locally prominent families; (2) for its connection with and possible design by a noted local builder; and (3) as a good example of vernacular Federal period architecture in Andover. The property retains integrity of design, materials, workmanship, and setting, and meets Criteria A, B, and C of the National Register. 9. Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 17 Hidden Rd is said to have been built about 1812 for Isaac Chandler, farmer, by his son-in-law David Hidden, a housewright. Chandler's grandfather originally held this property, which Isaac occupied from his birth in 1754 to his death in 1832. He married first (1780) Abigail Holt and second (1826) Elizabeth Upton.
The inventory shows a comfortable estate of $3230 in land and buildings, $786 in personal effects, and a detailed list of articles brought to the house by the second Mrs. Chandler at their marriage. Sources indicate that David Hidden came to Andover from Newburyport with William Bartlet to construct the new buildings at Andover Theological Seminary ca. 1808-10. Hidden married Chandler's daughter Mary in 1816; they lived on the family homestead with her father and brother Isaac. Hidden bought half the dwelling house from his aged father-in-law in 1828, purchasing the other half in 1834 from his sister-in-law Abigail Chandler, the only other heir. David Hidden died in 1861, "highly esteemed and respected He wan a kind-nearted and excellent neighbhe most subetantlat citizens of the towm. The farm was inherited by the Hiddens' two children, Mary (1818-1893) and David I.C.

Bradford Lewis for the use of his daughter. 10.
