Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) No. 15-17 Porter Rd was built ca. 1830~40 by farmer Asa Abbott (1770-1851). Asa was the fifth generation of "useful and respected"1 Abbotts on this farm site; he was also prominent in such town affairs as the building of the Scotland District schoolhouse. Asa was married in 1798 to Judith Jaquith, and was the "Honored - Father"? of seven children. He is known to have lived with his father on the site, but probably built this new house to mark a new beginning after the death of his father, Lieut. Timothy Abbott, in 1826.

Asa left the east part of this duplex to his son Asa Albert Abbott and the west part of the house to his son Sylvester Abbott. The brothers continued to farm the land, which remained in the family until the turn of this century. The house is significant for its unusual duplex design and the delicate articulation of its fenestration. Iwo recessed doorways at opposite ends of the house and the distinctively Andover cornerblocks on the windows highlight the facade. The Asa and Sylvester Abbott House is notable (1) as an uncormon, rural examole of the duplex house type, with an attractive Greek Revival design, and (2) for , ana (2) tole its associations with the agricultural history of southern Andover. The property retains integrity of desgin, materials, workmanship, and setting; it meets Criteria A and C of the National Register. 10.
