Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The David Mason Anthony House is a substantial brick mansion which is one of the city's best remaining examples of the French Second Empire style. The house was built about 1875 for David M. Anthony, a partner in the provision company of Anthony, Swift & Co. The colonial Lafayette-Durfee House which stood on the site was moved to Cherry Street to make way for the more elaborate Victorian residence. The builder may have been Earle and Horton, as one of that firm's senior partners, Danforth Horton, was the uncle of Anthony's wife.
Brick construction is less common than frame in 19th century Fall River, and its use here indicates an important house. Details such as the stone quoins and incised stone lintels also stand out. The ornament was originally much more elaborate, however. Early photographs show a cupola with iron cresting, patterned slate roof, rich dormer trim, a broken semi-circular pediment over the center dormer, and balustrades above the portico and bay window. The matching carriage house has been demolished and an iron fence along the sidewalk has been removed. Despite the changes, the house remains a distinctive example of its style, notable for its brick construction and fine workmanship, and as such meets Criteria C of the National Register individually. 10.
