Major alterations (with dates)North ell porch enclosed, 2 small ells at rear 1930's Moved no Date Approx, acreage 3.2 Setting 40' from road; gable flank to road; rural context ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within comnunity) The house at 191 Hornbine is a duplex built between ca. 1875 and ca. 1890. In proportion, the house closely resembles a typical late 19th century 1½-story cottage, but has two side ells, one at each end. The central entrance is flanked by projecting bay windows. roof flank is straight and the eaves unadorned. This is a modest house, which reflects the state of Rehoboth's economy at the end of the 19th century. Moreover, multi-family dwellings are not common in Rehoboth, although they were constructed from mid 18th century onward.
As the only known example of its type and period and as a representative of the evolution of the two-family house form from the vertical arrangement of the Federal period to a horizontal cottage configuration in the late 19th century, the house at 191 Hornbine Road meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places individually. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) Little is known about the history of this house other than the fact that it was built by the Baker family, descendants of early settlers in southern Rehoboth., Traditionally, it is said to have been built by twin brothers John and James Baker and occupied by them.
