Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Generally referred to as the Borden-Winslow House, this Georgian period dwelling is one of the earliest in Fall River. Local tradition assigns a construction date of 1740, and the detailing could date anytime up to the Revolutionary War years.
Of particular interest is the fine Georgian pedimented door enframement, which includes a 6-light transom within its entablature. The survival of this doorway makes the house unusually important. The Borden-Winslow House is one of six in the Steep Brook area considered to be the best representatives of the pre-industrial period of the city's history. These houses along North Main Street give testimony both to Steep Brook's early prominence over the southern area of the town and to the original agricultural character of Fall River. Their small scale, rural setting and linear relationship to one another stand in sharp contrast to the development that overtook the city with the construction of the first textile mill in 1811.
As a rare surviving example of the Georgian style and one of the earliest remaining houses in Fall River, the Borden-Winslow House meets criteria A and C of the National Register, individually. 10.
