Rehoboth's only known surviving commercial building of the Federal period and its most intact and sophisticated example of a small number of well-developed center hall, double internal chimney plan houses is the Briggs Tavern. Tavern occupies a prominent location at the intersection of Anawan Street and Tremont Street, two early transportation routes, and is notable for the preservation of its well-crafted interior and exterior details: splayed window lintels (rare in Rehoboth), panelled chimney breasts, chairrails and cornice trim.
In addition, (Continued) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) Built in a period when settlement was increasing in this area of northern Rehoboth and sited at a major intersection of two primary roads known as Stevens Corner, Briggs Tavern reflects the development of the community in the late 18th through 19th centuries. Individually, it meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places and with additional documentation may be shown to meet criteria A and/or B.
