The house has a north-south orientation; the facade gable above the entrance has a "pine-tree" Palladian window in the gable field.
The porch has chamfered posts, corner brackets and a cast-iron rail (probably original). No occupation for Hathaway Brightman is listed and the circa date for the house is speculation, as the directory addresses are so vague where Border City is concerned. As a particularly fine example of the mid-19th century Gothic cottage, with unusual and largely intact detailing and a picturesque quality which harks back to an earlier, more rural era, the Hathaway Brightman House meets criteria C of the National Register, individually. o the lie 10.
