Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) This structure was built in 1806 by William Barnabas Canedy when he married Susan Hughes Luther. They had 13 children, seven of them daughters, and all seven girls taught in Fall River Schools.
Squire Canedy, as he was called, ser as postmaster at Steep Brook and served in the General Court. He also was appointed to a committee to lay out the North Burial Ground in 1825. Tradition says this house was used as a station of the Underground Railway. With its slender pilastered, elliptical fanlighted door, its delicate cornice molding and full 2-story height, this house is a significant local example of Federal style. The Squire Canedy House is one of six in the Steep Brook area considered to be the best representatives of the pre-industrial period of the city's North Raln history. These houses along North Main Street give testimony both to Steep Brook's early prominence over the southern area of the town and to the original agricultural character of Fall River.
Their small scale, rural setting linear relationship to one another stand in sharp contrast to the development that overtook the city with the construction of the first textile mill in 1811 As a distinctive example of Federal period architecture and important surviving monument to the pre-industrial age in Fall River, the Canedy House meets criteria A and C of the National Register, individually. 10.
