Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Carpenter Street Bridge (1873) which spans the west branch of the Palmer River at Carpenter Street is the only surviving example of the small stone bridges built to span Rehoboth's many streams in the 19th century; others have been replaced by modern concrete and culvert construction. The present bridge replaced an early double span wooden bridge erected c.1720 when Carpenter Street, originally an Indian trail, was recognized as a public road. It was probably first used primarily to transport sawn lumber from Rehoboth mills to coastal towns for sale and shipment; later it facilitated the transport of corn and grain to and from mills, as well as the movement of Rehoboth's growing population.
The bridge continued in use with only minor repairs until 1873 when a special appropriation was made at Town Meeting to replace it with a lower maintenance stone bridge. The Carpenter Street Bridge was erected in two weeks in the summer of 1873 under William Lake, road boss, and three assistants at a total cost of $218.15 (S15 for materials). Only 'local stone from Rehoboth farms and locally milledguard rail timber were used. Construction consists of two head abutments and a central pier of dry laid fieldstone flared at the top to reduce the cap stone span. The cap stones measure up to 10 feet long, 3 feet wide and 18 inches thick. Low stone retaining walls extend along the road, for several yards, infilled between the walls and road bed with gravel. 10.
