The Colonel Thomas Carpenter III House is an outstanding and highly unusual example of early to mid 18th century building design which departs significantly from typical architecture of the period in Massachusetts. It is a large 2½ story central chimney plan structure, notable for its gable on hip roof and set back second story with a narrow pent roof between the first and second stories on all elevations. Some have suggested the form may represent a type of garrison structure, although neither tra- dition nor documentation are known to support this.
The possibility of two or more (Continued HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) Colonel Thomas Carpenter III (1733-1807) established his homestead in this house with one hundred sixty-four acres here on his farther, Deacon Thomas Carpenter's, farm ca. 1750. Colonel Thomas Carpenter, a distinguished patriot, is the most renowned member of that illustrious early Rehoboth family. Prior to the Revolution, he was already one of the town's wealthiest citizens. He was able to purchase one hundred thirty-six acres of former pastoral school lands in 1761 and a total of seven pews in the new (second) meetinghouse during the 1770s. He was also a surveyor and may have designed and/or built many of Rehoboth's houses in the late 18th century.
The "Old Yellow Meeting House" (built 1773; torn down ca. 1840) was probably his design as documentation exists showing that he submitted a plan and was later paid approximately one-quarter of the building costs. During the Revolution, Colonel Thomas Carpenter's regiment of local men fought as far away as New York. His reputation and influence were such that in 1787, when the selectmen discussed taking charge of the local munitions supply, the townspeople were asked to consider "what further instructions they will give the selectmen concerning the town stock at Colonel Thomas Carpenters if he refuses to give it up" (Snape 1976:116). After his death in 1807, the house remained in the Carpenter family until at least 1830.
As a singular architectural example associated with one of Rehoboth's most illustrious and well-documented Revolutionary period citizens, the Colonel Thomas Carpenter III House meets criteria B and C of the National Register of Historic Places individually. The two major downstairs rooms are in original condition, and have fine panelling, interior shutters and cased posts and beams.
