Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Children's Home is historically significant as one of the city's early social welfare agencies and architecturally notable as a brick Colonial Revival institution which successfully aims for a home-like rather than institutional appearance. The substantial 1894 "home" is not typical of the Colonial Revival but does utilize elements associated with that style, including a columned porch, bracketed. cornice, gambrel roof, and pedimented formers. The asymmetrical massing of the building, its complicated roofline of intersecting gambrels, and the eliptical window on the front facade and the use of brownstone trim are reminiscent of the earlier Queen Anne style.
Although difficult to catagorize stylistically, the well-crafted and virtually intact structure ranks among the city's best examples of late 19th century institutional architecture. Its appearance is enhanced by the setting on a large lot. The Children's Home was founded in 1873 as a merger of the Fall River Orphan's Asylum and Children's Friend Society. It was intented to function as a home rather than an institution and originally occupied a house on the northwest corner of No. Main and President Avenue. A wooden building later erected on Robeson St. was replaced by the present structure in 1895. For most of its history the Children's Home has been a favored city charity. In recent years it has provided a residential program for about 20 children ages 9 to 16 whostay an average of 3 years.
Because of its unusual style, fine workmanship, intact quality and long history as an important Fall River social institution, the Children's Home meets criteria A and C of the National Register, individually. 10.
