Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The William Collins House (c. 1800) is a small 1½ story vernacular farmhouse with the typical 5-bay, center chimney plan. The Italianate cap molded lintels date from the Mid-19th century.

The house is particularly evocative of the early settlement period because of its setting on a large wooded lot with stone retaining walls and wooden fencing. The Collins House is'one of six in the Steep Brook area considered to be the best representatives of the pre-industrial era of the city's history. -These houses along North Main Street give testimony both to Steep Brook's early prominence over the southern area of the town and to the original agricltural character of Fall River. Their small scale, rural setting and linear. relationship to one another stand in sharp contrast to the development that overtook the city with the construction of the first textile mill in 1811. As one of the city's notable early houses, well-maintained and well-sited, the Collins House meets criteria A and C of the National Register, individually. 10.
