This house is one of the best remaining representatives of a two-story, five bay, gable roof house showing little evidence of post-Revolutionary architectural details, in Rehoboth. In addition, the farmstead overall is remarkably intact dating to the early 19th century, although recently the barn has been altered drastically (not included in nomination).
(Continued) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) This farm was established ca. 1750 by Joseah Cushing. His son David farmed there until his death in 1821. The valuation list for 1780, the Direct Tax List of 1798, and his probate inventory indicate that he was engaged in little more than subsistence farming. Caleg Cushing, who inherited the farm, probably left it much as remains today at his death in 1861. During his ownership, the second house was built -- traditionally as a result of a family conflict -- and the barn was relocated to its present site and enlarged. By 1868, his son Edwin F. Cushing was involved in mixed farming and expanded the poultry and dairy business.
His prosperity and diversity is indicated by a listing in Everts and Richards' 1895 Atlas with "General Farming" as his business (Everts and Richards 1895:34) .
