Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Davol School (1892) and its look-alike, the Connell School on Plymouth Avenue, are both excellent examples of the late 19th century 8-room brick grammar school Designed by the prolific local architect Joseph M.
Darling, the substantial Romanesque Revival schoolhouse is particularly notable for its square 4-level center tower with a Syrian arched entrance and open belfry. Details such as the brownstone sill and lintel courses, slate hipped roof, copper weathervane on the tower cap, bracketed cornice and corbelled brick chimneys have also remained largely intact. Inside the school has four classrooms on each of the two floors and restrooms and utility rooms in the basement. Many schoolhouses were built during the late 19th century to accommodate a growing population attracted to Fall River because of continued expansion of the mill economy In 1889 the city had 42 schoolhouses with 182 study rooms and 30 recitation rooms.
Between 1894 and 1900, 64 new classrooms were added by enlarging existing schools and constructing nine new school buildings In view of this 20% increase in the number of schools within a six-year period, the use of the same plan for the Connell and Davol Schools would seem practical and economical It is also not surprising that Darling was hired, as he had perhaps the largest architectural practice in the city during the late 19th and early 20th century and designed innumerable banks and office buildings as well as the Bradford-Durfee Textile School and the Stone and Aldrich Schools As a well-detailed, well constructed and virtually intact example of a particular building type--the brick grammar school--the Davol School meets criteria C of the National Register, individually. 10.
