The Nathaniel Drown House is one of the least altered mid eighteenth century gambrel houses, a once numerous style extant in Rehoboth. Recent restoration uncovered original flooring, fireplaces, and angle-matched feather-edged panelling in two second floor dividing walls which had not been visible. The panelling and some flooring is chestnut and documents the local onset of chestnut blight. Overall, the house has retained most of its original character and details which include horsehair plaster, pegged window strip moulding and casements, cased posts, and simple panelled mantels.
The east parlor has a horizontal board dado and a central cupboard in the plaster (Continued) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The builder of this house is not known. During the Revolution it was owned by a Nathaniel Drown, who sold it in 1785 to Squire Wheeler, Jr. In the early nineteenth century it was described by a local resident as having been considered "rather a poor farm" (Blanding Ms.). In 1850, it belonged to John Rogerson (Walling), in 1871 to J. M. Goff (Walling), and 24 years later to John Wilson with both outbuildings shown (Everts and R chards). In light of this rapid (for Rehoboth) turnover, it appears that Blanding's assessment of the farm's limitations may have been correct.
As one of a handful of gambrel cottages remaining in Rehoboth and particularly well-preserved, the Nathaniel Drown House meets criterion C of the National Register individually. Architectural Significance (Continued) wall above the mantel. There is some evidence to suggest an earlier date for the western portion of the house than the east.
In addition to supposed structural evidence now hidden one must step up into the east room from the central entrance hall and each half of the house has its own cellar accessible only from the outside. Aside from inevitable convenience modernizations which have not altered major features, significant additions have been the small west ell and a ca. 1935 rear addition. The former, probably dated to the mid-nineteenth century, has a "chimney on a stack" at its west end. It appears largely in the original condition, although the fenestration has been changed in the front. The rear ell has done substantial damage to a small portion of the back of the house - the rear central room and the external mass - otherwise the house is unscathed. A pre-1840 barn and mid-nineteenth century carriage shed are both in good condition.
They are set close together at right angles and connected by a small privy shed of contemporaneous or slightly later date.
