Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The John M. Earle House (c.1870) is one of the city's most elaborately detailed wood-frame Italianate houses. Since it was originally occupied by a carpenter, John M. Earle, it is possible to speculate that it was Mr.
Earle himself or his associates who so lavishly apportioned the trim. Alternating quoins are used not only at corners but also to set off a central pavillion, which has an enclosed Eastlakian porch of unusual richness with a three-part stained glass window above. The bay windows on both side facades are trimmed with the same type of strap ornament and brackets as the porch. The house terminates with a wide cornice with exaggerated double brackets and a square cupola. The Earle House is located on Durfee Street in a once more fashionable neighborhood which has suffered from downtown commercial encroachment. As a distinctive example of the Italianate style, richly detailed and largely intact, the house meets Criteria C of the National Register, individually. 10.
