acreage Setting_ 100 feet from road on rise; gable flank to road; rural context (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within the community.) The evolution of the 18th century center chimney cottage type into a characteristically 19th century structure is fully apparent in this farmhouse. A center entrance doorway with sidelights and flanking doric pilasters leads to a straight staircase and central interior hall. A wall in the first floor west room has been removed, creating a single space on that side of the house, and a bathroom installed in the northeast corner. What would have been a room in the northwest side has horizontal dado panelling on its remaining exterior walls. A closet has been added on the otherwise unchanged second floor.
The two end (Continued) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) This house may have been built by L. Bowen, who owned it in 1850 (Walling). He was possibly the son of Nathan Bowen, who then owned the large federal house next door (#76), for in 1871, L. Bowen is shown owning both (Walling). By 1895, the two had been sold, this property going to Edward L. Tracy (Everts and Richards). A barn, shown to the west of the house, may be the present horse barn, or an earlier structure. When in operation, this must have been a compact and efficient farm. The house presents a surprisingly sophisticated appearance to the street, despite its small size.
Rehoboth's most outstanding example of an end chimney Greek Revival cottage, which reflects its origin as a farmhouse, 30 Kelton Street meets criterion C of the National Register of Historic Places individually. Architectural Significance (Continued) chimneys are completely enclosed, but there appears to be no evidence of there having been a hearth at either. A third chimney is centered where the kitchen ell is attached.
The ell appears to be part of the original build. This chimney has a fireplace in the front and no opening on the ell side at this level. Whereas the two end chimneys originate at the top of the foundation, this one forms the core of the most interesting and unusual part of the house - the cellar. The cellar is a full L-shaped room, which was clearly used as a summer kitchen and for farm related activities. The length of the east foundation, which includes the ell, is an eight foot high stone wall with a door and three large windows with evidence of wooden shelves. The brick chimney base contains a boiler, a fireplace, and two bake ovens. Outbuildings related to farming here, are a standing garage and shed from the early to mid 20th century and a turn-of-the-century horse barn.
There is also a barn foundation (with cement floor), two remaining stone corn crib supports, and a stone-lined well within a few hundred yards of the house.
