Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) 108 Quarry Street (c.1850) is a modest 1½-story Greek Revival cottage in pristine condition, representative of the best mid-19th century vernacular architecture in Fall River.
The use of a 5-bay side-gable plan rather than the more up-to-date Greek Revival temple front represents a conservative continuation of 18th century tradition also seen in more elaborate Fall River houses of the same period, for example the c.1845 John Young House at 34 Franklin Street, which also features attic "frieze" windows. In the Quarry Street house, these windows are ornamented with iron grates, an unusual feature which appears to be original. Other notable features include the use of the same simple pilaster capitals for the center door entablature, corner boards and side porch posts. The house is located outside the early settlement area in what is now a modest resi- dential neighborhood. Its appearance is enhanced by the white picket fence with early granite carvedposts which encloses thesmall lot. The original owner of the Quarry Street house has not been determined.
At the time of publication of the first Fall River Atlas in 1871, the house was owned by a grocer, AlphonzoS. Covel. Covel did not live at this address and also owned other property in the vicinity, making earlier ownership difficult to determine. The date is based on stylistic evaluation. As a well-crafted, largely intact vernacular Greek Revival cottage which makes an excellent contrast with the more formal architect-designed Greek Revival mansions of the city elite of the period, the Quarry Street house embodies distinctive characteristics of its type and period and as such meets Criteria C of the National Register, individually. 10.
