Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Notre Dame parish was established in 1874 as the second French parish in Fall River. Founded as an offspring of St.
Anne's parish the church ministered to the increasing population of Canadians fron small farming settlements in Quebec who poured into this city and other New England communities in the late 1800's to work in the textile mills. In 1877, the Sisters of Jesus Marie, a religious order from the Province of Quebec, arrived at the reguest of Rev. Pierre J.B. Bedard, founding pastor of Notre Dame. The Sisters of Jesus Marie took charge of and expanded teaching duties at the Notre Dame parochial school. Their first convent was a modest three story wooden structure located at the comner Mason St. and Bassett St. (now St. Joseph St.) where the Notre Dame School now stands. In 1877 plans were formulated to build a new convent and girl's academy. The building was designed by Louis G. Destremps, a Fall River architect and member of Notre Dame parish.
The Jesus Marie Convent (1887), a key structure in the development of Notre Dame parish, is a handsome four story brick Second Empire building. The central tower with its Italianate window lintels is blocked forward and dentils adorn the comnice line. For eighty-four years the new building housed Jesus Marie Academy, a private high school for girls. The last class to graduate was the Class of 1971. In the mid- 1970's, the academy was renovated into a retirement center-infirmary for retired religious. Although the church complex contained six interrelated properties, because the cathedral burned in 1982 only the three most significant components to survive are being nominated to the National Register. These structures remain as major symbols of the church's role in the community.
