Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) One of the most outstanding temple-fronted Greek Revival buildings in Fall River; the pedimented portico screens a two-story revealed entrance with an iron-railed balcony above the doorway. William Lindsey, born in Bristol, R. I.
on September 20, 1816, came to Fall River at the age of 15; he worked for G. Burr & Co., wholesale grocers & provision dealers until he was 19, when he purchased the business from his employers. He stayed in business until 1875, when he became treasurer of the Weetamoe Mills. He was also Director of the Metacomet National Bank and president of the Fall River Savings Bank, as well as being stockholder and director of several other mill corporations. The house, despite siding, is virtually intact; some iron-work is missing from the pediment and cupola and the window-caps have been removed. The house repeats forms utilized by Russell Warren, prominent R. I. architect and proponent of the Greek Revival, in other projects, but no documents confirm his involvement. The 2-story recess containing the entry is reminiscent of the 1833 Newport residence for William Vernon known as "Elmhyrst".
The pilaster treatment is a less dramatic variant of that of the Levi Gale House, also in Newport. The William Lindsey House, built for one of Fall River's early industrialists, is one of seven monumental temple-fronted Greek Revival houses left standing in Fall River. It is located adjacent to 399 North Main Street, the John Mace Smith House (c.1844), a smaller Greek Revival temple-fronted house; together, they form a strong visual nucleus on North Main Street just on the fringe of the downtown business district. The structure meets Criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places. 10.
