This small gable roof cottage has grown organically over the years as a function of its role as a homestead. There are clues to indicate a date in the mid 18th century. Restorations after lightning damage revealed unbarked timbers between the first story and attic, similar to those used as floor joists below. Closing of fireplaces, and much of the addition work occurred ca.1900 or earlier. The east kitchen ell was constructed forty years ago. The post and timber shed, now a gargae was operated as a store in the 19th century.
The store chimney and (Continued) HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) This house and accompanying land, now much reduced, has been in the Martin family since it was erected. Several generations are buried in the Martin family plot, approximately four hundred feet to the west. Earlier occupants operated a grist mill on Rocky Run, a quarter mile to the south, throughout the 19th century, of which there are some structural remains. There is also evidence of prehistoric habitation in the vicinity. The current owner is a principle figure in the Hornbine Baptist Church. The Martins have always contributed to the life of the community, providing necessary services and a social gathering spot, whether at the mill, the store, or the house.
