Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The beginnings of the Notre Dame school system date back to 1876, when a one-room classroom was organized in a home on Eastern Avenue.
A year later, members of the religious order of Jesus and Mary arrived from Canada to take up and expand the teaching duties. Classes were held for the next two decades in the parish's first church, a wooden structure on the site of the present Mt. St. Joseph's School. By 1898 larger quarters were needed and the parish set about construction Of Notre Dame School. Having successfully completed St. Joseph's Orphanage (1892) and Notre Dame Church (1894), Louis G. Destremps, a member of the parish & a Fall River architect who specialized in ecclesiastical work, was selected to design the new school. The result is a large 3 story brick parochial school in the Colonial Revival style. Its full entablature is enhanced by small brackets and dentils. The central entrance is recessed with a covered entry supported by fluted Doric columns.
The school opened in the fall of 1900 and was known at the time as Notre Dame College. Notre Dame School remains a distinctive example of its style, notable for its brick construction and fine workmanship, and as such meets Criteria C of the National Register individually. 10.
