Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Israel Picard House of 1897 is among the most unusual houses in Fall River, exceptional because of its granite block construction and exhuberant porch detailing aintaineanite among the mos as well as its well-maintained, intact quality.
The elaborate stone mansion was built by and for Israel Picard, proprietor of the Fall River Pink Granite Quarry, and probably served as an advertisement for his business.. It is an unusually well-detailed home for this modest neighborhood of triple deckers and two-family houses. The granite blocks of the main mass are set in straight courses and the granite extends from -the foundation to the stone bracketed cornice The entire front and part of the side are covered by a two-story Queen Anne porch with turned posts and a pierced-board balustrade The architectural impact is enchanced by the neatly-kept landscaping and granite curbing and posts along the perimeter of the property. A granite stable at the rear has been converted to a house The mansion is presently used as a funeral home.
Because of its distinctive architecture, unusual use of pink granite material, fine craftsmanship and intact quality, the Israel Picard House meets criteria C of the National Register, individually. 10.
