Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Pine Street School is the oldest Fall River frame school still in use -- the only older school still standing is the former Third Street School (c.1843) in Corky Row (384 Third St.), now much altered.
The Pine Street School, a functional,simple Italianate frame school building was built in direct response to the construction of the Border City School (now demolished) whose "finish is so elaborate and conveniences so ample, especially, for the grade of school, for which the building was intended, that I hesitate not to say, an error of considerable magnitude was committed in its construction. We need additional rooms more than we need useless conveniences and expensive Stceett school waspyp conof thelinps nast ono Pil me pinee schools built in the late 1870's, a period of tremendous population growth in Fall River. It is still in use as a neighborhood school, largely intact, and recently appropriately painted; it meets Criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places. 10.
