Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) One of four distinguished Ruskinian Gothic brick and granite Fire Stations designed by Hartwell & Swazey and built in 1873 (Stewart, Snow & Fass, contractors), all of which are still standing.
The firm of Hartwell & Swazey also designed the Central Congregational Church and the Academy Building. In 1895, an extension was built on the west side of the main structure for the accomodation of a hook and ladder truck. A portion of the building was used as a police station. Built strategically in several quarters of the city, these fire stations were built in anticipation of the completion of the Fall River Water- Norks, and were considered to be the most modern fire-fighting stations of the period. Ruskinian Gothic was "the style" for public buildings in Fall River circa 1873-1880. This fire station is an intact, richly detailed structure, representative of the fine architectural quality of public buildings erected during Fall River's period of greatest prosperity; it meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places.
