Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) The Quequechan Club, chartered in 1894, has been one of Fall River's most prestigious social clubs for nearly a century and occupies a building notable for its finely carved Colonial Revival interior and exterior detailing. The 25 prominent residents who formed the club represented the city's business and professional elite and included six chief executives of mills, six men otherwise engaged in the tertile industry, three investuent brokers, twb lawyers,ubne the founders and other conmunity leaders. The Quequechan replaced the Conmercial Club. purchased the William Mason homestead on North Main Street, (which dates back at least tc the time of publication of the 1871 Atlas) and hired the major New Bedford architect N.C. Smith to renovate the building.
It is not clear what elements of the Mason House were retained, but the full-blown Colonial Revival facade clearly dates from the 1890's. The portion of the building at the far right, which constituted the original clubhouse, has the symmetrical proportions, pilasters, triangular roof pediment and colurmed portico typical of buildings inspired by the Georgian period in American architecture. This style, along with coeval Adamesque versions, was popularized by the prestigious New York firm of McKim, Mead and White beginning in the mid-1880's, and the Quequechan Club is one of the best examples in Fall River. The converted clubhouse opened in 1895 and within a year membership had increased to 200. In 1920 the club purchased the home of Dr. Hubert Wilbur directly to the south and linked the two structures. The Italianate style Wilbur House appears to have been built in 1877 by Hezekiah A.
Brayton, who was to become a cashier at the First National Bank and treasurer of the Sagamore Mill. The well-known Providence firm of Angell and Swift was hired to redecorate the interior of the expanded club and probably made other changes needed to join the two houses. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (con't) room was rebuilt and much of the interior redecorated after a fire which damaged the basement and lower floor. The interior presently includes much early 20th century oak woodwork and furnishings probably dating from the Angell and Swift remodelling or the 1922 redecoration. For over 75 years, club membership was limited to males, although wives shared guest privileges. In 1974, associate membership was opened to woman. The club continues in active use to the present day. As an important Fall River social club housed in a distinctive Colonial Revival clubhouse, the Quequechan Club meets criteria A and C of the National Register, individually.
