Historical significance (include explanation of themes checked above) Parish History: St. Joseph's was founded in the spring of 1873 to serve North End Catholics who until then belonged to St. Mary's Cathedral. The first St. Joseph's Church was a temporary edifice on Vestal St., which was later moved to the present site on North Main St. & Weetamoe Street. The congrega- tion rapidly increased & on Monday, April 5, 1880,ground was broken for con- struction of a new church. The church was formally dedicated in 1885 by Bish Hendricken. For a time, French-speaking Catholics attended St. Joseph's, but as their number increased, they formed a parish St. Mathieu's in 1887. St. Joseph's rectory was built in 1889. A handsome, High Victorian Gothic structure, St. Joseph's is one of three distinguished churches designed by Patrick C.
Keely, one of the country's leading Catholic ecclesiastical architects. His reputation was established locally with the design for St. Mary's Cathedral (1852-1856). St. Joseph's was built to accommodate the growing.numbers of Catholics who had settled in the northern section of the city in the 1870's to work in the northern mills (Border City, Narragansett, Mechanics, Sagamore). Keely, an Irish immigrant, was a leading exponent of the Gothic Revival; St. Joseph's is unique in that it follows the more popular style--Victorian Gothic--for public buildings in Fall River c.1876-1880. The use of brick instead of granite here was common in this neighborhood, as brick was more economical to ship by water, than to haul stone down the steep hills. Located opposite the North Burial Ground, St. Joseph's is an important visual landmark in the northern section of the city.
It retains its integrity of design, workmanship and setting; it meets Criteria A and C of the National Register of Historic Places. 10.
