The Aaron Wheeler House is one of Rehoboth's best preserved examples of a mid 18th century gambrel cottage and one of very few houses from this period which is securely dated through deed research. It retains it original form and plan as well as interior and exterior architectural details. The location of the bake oven in the east side chamber, rather than rear, and information collected during extensive stabilization work (1955) indicate that it was originally built as an end-chimney house with the west portion added later in the 18th century.
As an excellent example of its class from the mid 18th century, the Aaron Wheeler House meets criterion C of the National indvdually HISTORICAL SICNIFICANCEC (Expiain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) Aaron Wheeler (1722/23-1800) erected this house almost immediately after his father Colonel Philip Wheeler gave him a large tract of land on both sides of Fairview Avenue in 1745. Aaron was a farmer and also active in local industrial activies, purchasing one quarter share of a nearby sawmill in 1763, and owning an interest in the adjacent Peck's Forge. Aaron participated in numerous military campaigns during the Revolution as did his son Simeon Wheeler (1760-1833).
Following Aaron's death in 1800, the house and part of the farm were purchased by Stephen Bowen in 1818; the present owner is the sixth generation of Bowen descendants to live there.
