Setting Urban context; an integral element in a row of similarly scaled buildings along Main Street. Criteria Statement: The Bangs Block possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials, and workmanship. It is significant for its well preserved late-Italiante design and as a well-documented representative of downtown Springfield's small scale, later nineteenth century, commercial enterprises. It thus meets criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Bangs Block is a good example of smaller late 19th century commercial blocks, which at one time were particularly prevalent in the southern blocks of Main Street. The areanonth offlainstreet was more commercially-oriented than the factory/ industrial area to the east and serviced the expanding residential neighborhood of the South End. The Bangs Block is four stories and four bays wide, creating a rather narrow facade lined with windows, whose brick corbelled hoods frame the seg- mental arched openings. The cornice band has a wide brick frieze and a corbelled brick cornice of decorative design which adds to the visual delight of this typical period facade.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Bangs Block was constructed c. 1870 on property owned by the Bangs family since at least twelve years earlier. The block was built to house the Bangs Market, a small grocery run by this family for over 25 years, first by John Bangs, and later in the century by his son, Adam Bangs, until 1903. John Banks ran the shop as a flour and grain dealer, while under his son, Adam Bangs, it was a meat market. The market was later converted to use as the shop of Otis Lombard, watchmaker (1917) and housed other commercial tenants over the years. Although little is known about the Bangs family, their role in operating a small store in this area of the downtown represents the scale and scope of trade common to the area in the late 19th century.

This area of Main Street was gradually converted from what had been combined residential and commercial uses, largely in two-story wooden buildings, to prominent commercial masonry blocks, still relatively small in scale, but together forming a cohesive streetscape reflective of a bustling mercantile trade. As part of that streetscape, the Bangs Block is a reminder of the area's growth and development in the late 19th century. BIBLIOGRAPHY and/or REFERENCES Building Permits Street Directories C.
