Springfield South Quadrangle (Staple additional sheets here) ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community.) The Baystate Corset Block is a large four story brick structure occupying the corner of Dwight and Taylor Streets. The Taylor Street facade, erected in 1884 reflects the typical panel brick features of the period -stilted segmental window arches and decorative corbeled cornice.
The Dwight Street facade, dating from 1918, consists of brick piers dividing triple glared bays. The building preserves most ofits original elements, indluding 6/6 sash and storefronts, intact. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Bay State Corset Block possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It is significant for its associations with two local manufacturing firms and because its growth and development are clearly revealed in its well preserved design, It meets criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places. Construction of this large block was begun in 1874 with two woodworking concerns as its first tenants.
P.P Kellogg bought the building in 1883 for his paper products business, and in 1888 built an addition along Taylor St. . Ten years later Baystate Corset began manufacturing their well known "womaen's and children's waists." They remained at this location through 1920, modernizing the Dwight Street facade in 1918. The building's main historical association is with the Bay State COrset Company located here from 1895 to 1920. This company was established at West Brookfield in 1884 by C.L. Lomstead and Myron W. Sherman. Two years later, it moved to Springfield, at first occupying quarters of 50 X 100 feet in this block. By 1888, the firm had grown to the extent that it built the four story rear addition to the block. During its peak years, Bay State Corset Co. produced 5,000 corsets daily.
The top floor was devoted to cutting rooms, the middle two floors to over 400 sewing machines run by yound women workers. In all, 75 to 80 different styles of corset were produced chng ia die tho e baig to rar o ly, The firm was one of the largest makers of corset on the continent and sold its goods to wholesalers and retailers nationwide.
