It is significant as one of the few remaining smaller late 19th century commercial blocks which once dominated the southern end of Main Street. design features. at meets criteri fire, this building continues to preserve its original C of The National Register of Historic Places. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) The Burbach Block is a good example of smaller late 19th century commercial blocks which at one time were particularly prevalent in the southern blocks of Main Street. This area of Main Street was more commercially-oriented than the factory/industrial area to the east, and it serviced the expanding residential neighborhood of the South End. The Burbach Block is three stories in height and five bays wide. The facade is treated with brick coursing and window hoods typical of the period.
The corners are capped with merlons which add to the decorative appearance of the facade. Simplified coursing wraps around to the south elevation whose paired upper story windows now overlook a small park. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) The Burbach Block was built in 1882 on à site which had previously been owned by H.W. Pearl, a local flour dealer. It was built by Gerard Burbach, who served as proprieter of the adjacent United States Hotel (demolished in 1915), from the 1870's until 1894. The block was associated with the Hotel during these years and may actually have served as a sort of annex to the Hotel during the 1880's and '90's. The Burbach family had a strong association with the United States Hotel during its most prosperous years.
The Hotel was erected in the early 1850's and owned by a German named Mr. Busch. It was the fifth hotel built in the city. In 1857, the 3-story frame building was acquired by Gustave Gruendler, who managed it until the 1870's, when the Burbach family took over. Mrs. Augustus Burbach, Gerard Burbach, and later his son Louis Burbach managed the German Hostelry until 1894, during its peak years. Later, in 1913, there was a debate to remove the buildings south side in order to widen Cross Street. Iwo years later, the Hotel was demolished. The Burbach Block outlasted its earlier neighbor and continued to house a variety of commercial shops in the 20th century. Among these were a dry goods store, saloon, restaurant, and later a furniture store.
