The Cutler and Porter Block is adjacent to the Produce Exchange. The two buildings are visually integrated by their red brick construction and by the 20th century application of yellow paint to trim. 1894 design elements include window treatments- segmentally arched on the west side, and round arched on the facade top story. Overlaid on this is a 20th century remodeling by the Young Company which includes an elaborate parapet, linking of the second and third story windows in the center bay with the Young Co. insignia above, and glass block windows at the ground floor.
The composite is one of the most elaborate designs for a manufacturina block in the survey area, and its best example of a modernization HISTORICAL SIGNIGICANCE The Cutler and Porter Block possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. It is significant for associations with several local industries, especially the W.F. Young Company, manufacturers of medicines. Additionally, it is a well designed block which integrates elements of its original 1894 design with 1920's remodelings by the Young Company. It meets criteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places. The Cutler and Porter Company was established in 1880 as wholesale dealers in boots, shoes, and rubber goods. They contracted with F.S. Newman, a prominent Springfield Architect, to design this block for their use and it was completed in. 1894. W.F.
Young occupied half of this block in the 1920's. They are listed as manfacturers of proprietary medicines and are best known for a product named Absorbine Jr.. They remain there today. Cutter and Porter, established in 1880, was incorporated in 1907 by Leroy Z. Cutler and W. P Porter. They moved to the location in 1894, remaining here until 1913, when the ground floor was leased to Fairbanks, Morse and Co; a large manufacturer of gasoline and oil supplies. The building is perhaps better known for its association since 1923 with the W.F. Young Co.. Starting in 1981, W.F. Young began blending rare herbs and medicants for KF. Vung btg the relief of horse's pains. With the success of horse liniments, Young realized there would probably be a market for human pain remedies too. - Thus began the line of Absorbine and Absorbine Ir. for which the company became famous.
Young moved to Springfield from Meriden, Connecticut. His first laboratory was his home on Amherst Streeet. It then moved to Monmouth St., in 1909 to Temple St. and in 1923 to its current Lyman St. address.
