It is significant for-its continuous role in Springfield!s. es commercial history, and as one of only two remaining mid-mineteenth century commercial buildings to preserve its early form and features. Thus, it meets criterion A as a rare representative of downtown Springfield's early commercial development and criterion Cas a relatively intact example of the Greek Revival style as it developed locally. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community) This building is the third oldest structure still extant within the Multiple Resource Area.
It was originally one in a series of similar blocks, the others of which have since been removed or insensitively remodelled. It is a good example of mid-19th century architecture and typifies many buildings of the period, almost all of which were subsequently demolished for larger commercial blocks. The building is three stories high and four bays wide. The east bay has only a doorway, capped by a broad stone lintel, while the rest of the ground floor has a large period storefront. The upper bay openings are framed by straight HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community) This building was one of a series constructed in the 1840's on Stockbridge Street.
The street was laid out in 1839 by Elam Stockbridge, and he followed by building a series of structures similar to this block which formed a cohesive unit of stores and rooms. Stockbridge retained ownership of the build- ing, leasing it to various tenants, who in 1858 included Frederick Goff, a bootmaker. The ground floor shop later became a grocery/delicatessen, which from 1888-93, was run by a Mr. Greim. The grocery was sold in 1893 to Peter Vogel who managed it for another ten years. In 1913, the business was again sold, this time to Emil Guenther and his brother-in-law, Richard Handel, who in that year established Guenther and Handel Co., a deli and fancy grocery store. They came to Springfield from Fitchburg, after having managed a similar type of business in that city. The shop gained an excellent reputation for fancy groceries imported from around the world.
The kitchen was located on the building's second floor. Handel died in 1915 and Guenther in 1934, but the shop remained in family ownership at this same location until 1972. It was sold but retained its name until 1973, when it relocated to 1588 Main Street. Guenther & Handel remains a long-standing and well-known firm which became a local "institution", known for its quality service and unusual merchandise.
