ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (Describe important architectural features and evaluate in terms of other buildings within community.) Westhoff's design for the Hamuen Savings Bank is a fine example of Classical Revival detailing. The facade is pleasantly proportioned with its pedimented center entrance bay and large second-story windows set in antis from a row or Ionic pilasters. It is a good local exampte of classical revivalism; other related examples include several banking and insurance companies as well as municipal offices.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The Hampden Savings Bank possesses integrity of location, design, setting, materials and workmanship. Constructed in 1918, it represents the growth of this savings in- stitution which had been chartered at mid-century to serve railroad workers. Additionaly, it is a good local example of the Classical Revivial style. It meets cniteria A & C of the National Register of Historic Places. Hampden Savings Bank had been founded in 1852, the year of Springfield's incorporation as a city, and was always located within a few blocks of the depot. One of the major reasons for its chartering had been to service the railroad workers. In 1918, this block was built expressly for Hampden Savings Bank and was designed by Max Westhoff.
Westhoff came to Springfield in 1917 from Saranac Lake N.Y. where he had had a small office. He designed several houses for Springfield's more well-to-do citizens in the next tiwo decades, as well as the William Pynchon Memorial Building at the Quadrangle. - The Hampden Savings Bank had a long-standing reputation as one of Springfield's Leading thrift institutions. It was chartered as a savings bank ready for the From 1852 until 1871, it shared banking rooms with Agawam National Bank. In 1899, needing more space, it relocated to the Fort Block at Main and Firomt Streets. AT thiis time, its deposits stood at $3,100,532.50. From then until the 1950's, the bank's greatest growth was experienced. This 1918 building represented the first of two moves to its own building.
As the bank continued to expand its deposits, it relocated its main headquarters again in 1952 to a new building at 19 Harrison Street.
