The Henking Hotel and Cafe meets Criteria A, B, and C. It is associated with the city's role as a growing commercial center in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a fashionable hotel close to the railroad station and commercial center. It was establish- ed by one of the leading families among Springfield's German community.
It is a fine example of the Georgian Revival style and one of only a few commercial blocks in the downtown designed in this style. The hotel facade features a handsome display of Georgian Revival design. Five bays wide and four stories high, the bays are separated by narrow brick piers and a brick corbel above the third story. The center bay has a HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state (continuation page) history and how the building relates to the development of the community.) The hotel was established in 1980 by Gustave and Elizabeth Gruendler, two of the earliest German immigrants in Springfield.
Its location directly opposite the entrance to the new Union Station on Lyman Street indicated its importance as a small hotel geared to the travelling man, with "good accommodations for gentlemen only." The Gruendlers arrived in Springfield in 1850 and began their hotel business by running the U.S. Hotel which stood at Main and Cross Streets. They ran a hotel at various downtown locations from 1857 to 1899, the present structure being their last and largest operation. Henry Henking was employed by Gruendler at the hotel and upon the owner's death in 1899, acquired the hotel, remodelled the facade and changed its name to Hotel Henking- Local architect, William Becker, designed the Georgian Revival facade. Henking died in 1906, leaving the hotel to his son, Gus, who expanded its facilities with the 1909 addition.
The addition contained a 30,000 square foot, 200-seat banquet hall and restaurant and was integrated with the other facilities of the hotel. The Henkings retained ownership until 1918. The property has remained in continuous use as a hotel and cafe. The building's importance as a hotel represents an essential aspect of the city's image as a commercial crossroads. The tremendous surge of business activity at the turn of the century prompted a need for fashionable new hotels close to the railroad station and downtown office blocks. The Henking was one of several hotels built during this period and is the only expample of a small businessmen's hotel which remains today.
Others such as the Charles and Kimball were of a much larger scale and represented a later period of expansion and commercial prosperity for the downtown, whereas the earlier (1893) Hotel Worthy was likewise grander in both design and image. The Henking illustrates that despite the pretentiouns of grandeur which some hotels took, there remained a viable market for small, family-run establishments to serve the ever-growing travelling salesman population. ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE (continued) . projecting window at the second level with spiral columnettes and a scrolled pediment. Its leaded glass transoms read "The Henking" in their design. Above it is a three-unit window under a common lintel with anthemion decoration and an ornate cartouche at the upper story level. The building is crowned by a wooden modillioned cornice which rests above a frieze of elaborate festoons. Only the first floor storefronts have been altered. The cafe is a two-story addition to the east of the orighial 1988 facade. The upper story is five bays wide with the brick set in bands to give a rusticated effect.
cornice features an elaborate frieze of festoons and a dentilled molding above, visually relating the addition to the hotel by its similar cornice treatment. The structure is a very early example of Georgian Revival design for commercial struc- tures and one of the best such examples in the city. Within the downtown survey area, it is clearly the earliest and one of the most elaborate commercial blocks of its type.
